![]() It appears we chose well when we picked new UltimateBet pro Matt Graham for our June cover – the young Vegas pro just won the $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha World Championship at the World Series. He now has $679,402 and a second bracelet to go with the gold he won last year in the $1,500 Limit Hold’em Shootout event.
Amazingly, just as in his Shootout victory in 2008, Matt had to make an amazing comeback at the final table. The 25-year-old was down by as much as 9-to-1 in chips when he was heads-up against the red-hot Vitaly Lunkin, the Russian who won the Moscow Open and then the WSOP’s $40,000 NL Hold’em Anniversary event just weeks earlier. Last year he was down 8-1 to Jean-Robert Bellande when play was heads-up.
The final table was ripe with bracelet winners – five of them, including Barry Greenstein – but Matt just calmly played his game.
“I was never too far behind before heads-up play started. I was not really in a rush,” he said. “I am perfectly OK with someone else throwing in a few raises and busting a few people. I’m just going to sit there and wait – wait until we get short-handed and then pick up the pace a little. I wasn’t worried about [being short] on chips.”
Matt never gave up and didn’t panic, even with the 9-to-1 chip disadvantage: “I was thinking I was just going to continue playing my best. No matter how good you play, I was a longshot in that situation. So, you just have to do all that you can to come back and hope the cards cooperate.”
So if you see someone playing online under the name “mattgraham” or “mattg1983,” be careful, and don’t count him out just because he has a short stack.
