The night before this year’s World Series of Poker was set to begin at the Rio in Las Vegas, WSOP Commissioner could not sleep. In a casual comment, he echoed the feelings of players around the world when he said: “Last night felt like Christmas Eve.” If you have been fortunate enough to build a bankroll during the past 12 months, the WSOP is a wonderland, and for a well-funded player of any skill level it is truly like being a kid in a candy store. Tournaments (and players) of all varieties imaginable are spread out in a vast competitive cornucopia, like succulent fruit ripe and juicy and ready for picking. And the off-the-felt activities aren’t bad either. But although thousands of players – of both the online and live persuasion – see WSOP bracelets as the holy grail of poker, there are some very smart people who use this time of year to build their bankrolls. The majority of WSOP entrants will go home with less than they came with – at least as far as money is concerned – but savvy cyber sharks hit the Internet tables hard while many of the game’s premier players are playing live 12 or more hours a day in the Amazon Room. There aren’t too many big-time players – or those who think they are big time – who will not be trying to get their mugs on a featured WSOP table this month. So with the online fields a little easier and the cash games softer, this might be the time for you to make a nice breakthrough. Check out pages 52-54 to see the players we think will make some noise in the Series this year. You won’t be seeing them online as much right now. Then sink your teeth into our articles on how solid pros approach the game on pages 22 and 56. Soak up pro tips from John Tabatabai (60-62) and Rolf Slotboom (46-49). Then check out our player rankings on pages 20-21, results on pages 78-79 and statistics on pages 66-67 so you will know if you are at a table with top-notch talent. Then proceed to pick your satellite (pages 68-70) or major tournament (72-77) and dive in, full of confidence and ready to go. While the pros are away, it’s time to play.
